Lead Coach Gus Caie
Gus has played in nearly every position, but he finds himself most comfortable in the front row. Although he has played rugby at school since he was 9, the first club he played at was Bromley, for their colts. It wasn’t until after university that he settled at Old Albanians for a number of seasons but had to hang his boots up due to work commitments. 5 years later he found himself at Hadleigh and strapped them back on.
In 2011-12, his third season at Hadleigh, he helped secure promotion to Eastern Counties 1. He was unable to play the full following season and eventually hung up his boots for a second time due to a couple of minor, but significant, injuries. Being away from rugby was not an option for him, which is why he has been coaching at Hadleigh since 2013. Both of his sons play at Hadleigh; Harrison is in this group, Nathan is 4 years below.
“There is a constant devil on my shoulder urging me to get back into playing, but for the moment I am fulfilling my urges by coaching. There’s always next season…”
Assistant Coach Jon Rodriguez
Jon started playing rugby at Colchester, joining their U13s and playing through to the colts. He played most of his rugby as a hooker for Colchester, Suffolk and Eastern Counties, but occasionally played in the back row. Having had trials for London clubs, Jon ended up joining the Army and played for the Royal Military Police. When he left, he joined Stowmarket but also like Gus, he has now hung his boots up and the 17-18 season is his 4th
of coaching. Both of his sons play at Hadleigh; Ewan is in this group, Austin is 3 years below.
“Your child’s success or lack of success in sports does not indicate what kind of parent you are. But having an athlete that is coachable, a great teammate, mentally tough, resilient and tries their best IS a direct reflection of your parenting.” ~Anonymous
Parent Helpers Chris Hussey / Becca Suddaby
Chris – whose son, Jack, is in this group – has been in an active role since the U6s. Becca and Nev – whose respective sons, Ollie and Errol, are also in this group – have been helping out since the U9s. Their continued help is invaluable, especially due to the size of the squad.
The majority of the squad have been together since the U7s and have built solid friendships. Every season we have had new players join, with all levels of playing ability, and have become part of the group without any indication of them being new to the club. Unfortunately we have had a few leave, but over the years we have been luck enough to always have at least 20 kids available to play each season. Such a large base allows players to develop through each other, on top of learning from the coaching we provide. Our style is very simple, with a focus on enjoyment and participation.
